On 5th April, 2016 the Environmental Ministry has revised Solid Waste Management rules after 16 years.Shri Prakash Javadekar, Minister of State of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said that the rules are now applicable beyond municipal areas and extend to urban agglomeration, censor towns, notified industrial townships, areas under the control of airports, railways, defence, SEZ, state and government organizations, pilgrims, religious and historic importance.



Another important clause that has been added is the new responsibility of the generators to segregate wet, dry and hazardous waste. The new laws have mandated setting up of Material Processing Facility within 2 years by all local bodies having 1 million or more population.
